In recent years, the general perception has been that over 60%of the products Romanians eat are imported. In reality, out of 7bneuros, the budget going to basic products, only 1.8bn euros go tofoodstuffs of foreign origin.

According to a ZF survey, although the trade balance does show adeficit, with imports of agrifood products amounting to 3.8bneuros, while exports stand at 2.2bn euros, the INS data reveal 75%of the food (beverages not included) Romanians eat is produced inRomania.
The figures presented as official ones, according to which the foodRomanians eat is mainly imported, are countered by the dataprovided by professional organisations, the Competition Council orthe INS and by the calculations regarding the prices basicfoodstuff is acquired at.
It is true that in certain periods of the year imports on certainproduct categories are dominant, but on average their weight onstores' shelves is much lower than that of Romanian products.
