Myth of imports, dissolved: only 25% of food budget go to imported products
In recent years, the general perception has been that over 60% of the products Romanians eat are imported. In reality, out of 7bn euros, the budget going to basic products, only 1.8bn euros go to foodstuffs of foreign origin.
According to a ZF survey, although the trade balance does show a
deficit, with imports of agrifood products amounting to 3.8bn
euros, while exports stand at 2.2bn euros, the INS data reveal 75%
of the food (beverages not included) Romanians eat is produced in
Romania.
The figures presented as official ones, according to which the food
Romanians eat is mainly imported, are countered by the data
provided by professional organisations, the Competition Council or
the INS and by the calculations regarding the prices basic
foodstuff is acquired at.
It is true that in certain periods of the year imports on certain
product categories are dominant, but on average their weight on
stores' shelves is much lower than that of Romanian products.
