The Government is today assuming responsibility before theParliament for the Social Dialogue Code that confirms thedisappearance of nationwide collective labour agreements.

After having in March assumed responsibility for the LabourCode, the government is now repeating the procedure for anothermajor project, the Social Code. This is a mammoth project thatincludes employers' association law, trade unions law, socialdialogue law, the collective labour conflict law, the collectivelabour agreements law and the Economic and Social Councillaw.

The code is doing away with nationwide collective labouragreements. The Government maintains these are needed at a "micro"level.

Labour Minister Ioan Botiş says the code had to be adopted asRomania's economy needs to breathe.

Premier Emil Boc also says the new code was absolutely necessaryafter the labour code was modified.

The Government is withdrawing from the Economic and SocialCouncil, but besides trade unions and employers' associations,non-governmental organisations will also be part of it.
