The Government is today assuming responsibility before the Parliament for the Social Dialogue Code that confirms the disappearance of nationwide collective labour agreements.

After having in March assumed responsibility for the Labour Code, the government is now repeating the procedure for another major project, the Social Code. This is a mammoth project that includes employers' association law, trade unions law, social dialogue law, the collective labour conflict law, the collective labour agreements law and the Economic and Social Council law.

The code is doing away with nationwide collective labour agreements. The Government maintains these are needed at a "micro" level.

Labour Minister Ioan Botiş says the code had to be adopted as Romania's economy needs to breathe.

Premier Emil Boc also says the new code was absolutely necessary after the labour code was modified.

The Government is withdrawing from the Economic and Social Council, but besides trade unions and employers' associations, non-governmental organisations will also be part of it.
