Vel Pitar bets on neighbourhood bakeries

17.07.2006, 19:04 14

Milling and bakery industry producer Vel Pitar will increase the number of specialised bakery shops to 50% of the company's total retail space in the next three years, against a mere 2-3% at present. "The company currently manages around 190 outlets, only five of which are specialised, with most of them being convenience stores, where an extremely wide range of food products are sold.
We estimate specialised stores will account for 50% of the total number of stores in the next few years," said Dan Trifu, development manager of Vel Pitar. Vel Pitar will open 15 specialised stores by the end of this year, following the 'Neighbourhood Bakery" concept, i.e. a bakery that sells cold and hot bakery products, sandwiches, soft drinks, coffee and tea. Bakery and pastry products make up 90% of the offer. The company's investments in the store network are to stand at 500,000 euros for this year, and starting next year, Vel Pitar intends to grant its franchise for expansion outside Bucharest. Trifu also said that, in addition to the existing locations, Vel Pitar would buy or rent other locations to use them as stores. "We have identified several dozen locations all over the country that go well with this concept. After we open several stores of our own, we will grant a franchise for other parts of the country," Trifu added.
