Traffic will be restricted on several of Bucharest's roads, and on the routes of almost 30 trolley buses and buses of the RATB (Bucharest Transport Authority). The restrictions will take place between April 2 and April 4, when the NATO summit is held, but underground trains will run as usual.
The summit will be policed by over 900 officers, whose mission began yesterday, after police units were stationed at all intersections along the summit's official route.
According to the National Security Commandment of the NATO Summit, traffic in Bucharest will be restricted on several main roads, with a lane designated for official delegations from "Henri Coanda" International Airport to the Parliamentary Palace. On Kiseleff Avenue, between Piata Presei Libere and Arcul de Triumf, the central section will be closed to traffic. Vehicles will also be restricted in the area around the Parliament- Izvor Street, Calea 13 Septembrie, between Panduri Road and Libertatii Blvd, Unirii Blvd, between I.C.Bratianu Blvd. and Piata Constitutiei, and Libertatii Blvd.
The authorities have scheduled a simulation for the designated lane, with the road signs set up along the route to remain in place during the summit.
During the same period, vehicles used for public transport, which run along the designated routes, will be forced to use alternative routes. Trolley buses on routes 79, 86, 85, 90, 91, 92, 61, 69 and 70 will be diverted, as will buses 122, 137, 268, 126, 168, 226, 368, 136, 300, 301, 335, 385, 783, 122, 137, 268, 336 and 601.
Underground trains will run as usual, after the authorities failed to request any additional trains, although Metrorex, the operator of the Bucharest underground, is able to provide two extra trains for each line.
"We have supplementary trains available, two for each line, but we will introduce them only if required, and so far, we have received no such demands," the manager of Metrorex, Gabriel Mocanu, said yesterday, in a statement quoted by Mediafax news agency.
