Easter holidays, eagerly awaited by retailers to fatten theirsales after consumption further shrank in the first months of thisyear, show Romanians' budget is still low and the shopping basketis poorer than last year.

Each year ahead of Easter, Romanians are going on a shoppingspree for lamb and other foods. Though the economy is stillsuffering from the crisis, Romanians went shopping in the lastweekend before Easter, but only bought staples.

"The best-selling products in the weekend before Easter werevegetable oil, bananas, sugar, fish, tomatoes and water," saysAndreea Mihai, a marketing manager with Carrefour, the biggesthypermarket operator on the domestic market.

Cora representatives in their turn say that among thebest-selling products, some are private labels of the storenetwork. As in Romania these products are associated with thelow-price segment, their having reached the top of the best-sellingEaster items shows Romanians are still focusing on price.
