Overdue payments on loans exceed 150m euros

13.11.2007, 20:14 8

The population's overdue payments on credits taken out from banks have surpassed the 500 million-RON mark for the first time, after increasing by more than 4% in September. At the end of the third quarter of the year, the population recorded overdue payments worth 505 million RON (slightly over 150 million euros), according to data from the NBR (National Bank of Romania). After the September increase, the annual rise of overdue payments has picked up speed, reaching 117%, against 107% last month. The fastest growth rate was registered in July, up 119%. Clients who took out credits in RON fuelled the expansion of overdue payments in September. Overdue payments for credits taken out in the local currency climbed by 3.4%, i.e. by 14 million RON, to 430.6 million RON (128 million euros). Overdue payments for credits in RON therefore account for 85% of the total, down slightly from 87% in September last year. The RON therefore holds a dominant position in the structure of credits taken out by the population, but its supremacy is not as apparent as before. The RON is preferred for consumer credits, where the majority of overdue payments are recorded, as opposed to instalments on mortgage credits, where clients are much better payers.
