The Henri Coanda International Airport (formerly Otopeni) has announced a 500 million euro investment, 450 million euros of which will be spent on the strategic long-term development plan, to last until 2020. "The strategic development plan for the Otopeni Airport is spread across a rather long time frame, until 2020, and takes into account all the estimates related to the development of the passenger and aircraft traffic. We estimate traffic to increase by 30% in 2007, twice higher than until now and then we will witness a constant pace of growth by 15-20%," Gheorghe Dobre, Transport Minister stated. Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport (AIHCB) has registered a 15% annual growth in passenger traffic over the last two years, reaching a total of 3.03 million passengers in 2005. The development programme of the airport was launched in 1994, with the first stage mainly consisting in the expansion of the capacity from 1.2 to 6 million passengers. "Thus far we have invested in the opening of a new international departures and arrivals terminal, in expanding the platforms to park aircraft, in building the multi-level car park and the completion of the runway 2," explained Gabriel Tara, AIHCB general manager. The development plan is currently in its second extended phase wherein the wing connecting the arrivals and departures terminal will be built and the beacon and security systems will be upgraded. ZF
