Imports account for 70% of ceramic tiles market

03.07.2008, 18:48 13

The local market of ceramic tiles will be dominated this year by imports from Italy, Spain and China, which will account for 70% of total sales, compared with 60-65% last year, amid a lack of investments in production on the local market. At present, Austrian-based Lasselsberger is the only company that has ceramic tile manufacturing plants in Romania. The local ceramic tiles market in Romania will amount to 250-260 million euros this year, up by around 15% against last year. Sales of ceramic tiles (wall and floor tiles) will amount to 50 million square metres, only 13 million of which will be produced locally, according to the Construction Materials Producers' Association in Romania (APMCR). 5.3 million square metres of ceramic tiles were imported from Italy in 2007, which are among the most expensive on the market. At an average price of 10 euros/square metre, this brings the overall value to around 50 million euros.
