Bucharest needs 1bn-euro investments to stay out of the dark

28.03.2008, 20:21 10

Bucharest needs investments worth one billion-euros in electricity networks over the coming years in order to cope with rising consumption. The development of the real estate sector, along with the investments people in Bucharest make in equipment running on electricity such as air conditioners, are straining the capital's obsolete network, causing frequent power cuts. "We will have the same problems this summer. The short time and the lack of funds have not allowed us to make all the necessary investments. The necessary investments amount to more than one billion euros over the next four or five years, or else we risk coming close to the critical point," said Serban Tudor, Electrica's technical director. Most of the necessary money will come from the price paid by the Italians at Enel for buying the majority interest in Electrica Muntenia Sud, the company that supplies power to Bucharest.
