Cosmetics made in the heart of Apuseni Mountains

19.06.2001, 00:00 20

At the very heart of Apuseni Mountains, in Craciunesti village, Ergo Chemical Industries has been producing decorative cosmetics for one and a half year.

The company, established in April 1999, is entirely private and two Greek businessmen hold 70% in it.

The company initially sold imported cosmetics, having a nation-wide distribution network. After several market surveys were conducted, the conclusion outlined that making the cosmetics in the country with imported raw materials was more profitable. Some cheaper and better products resulted.

Nail polish and hair dye are now manufactured at Craciunesti, but the cosmetics range will expand and include lipsticks and cosmetic pencils soon.

The raw materials come from Spain, Luxembourg or the US, with resounding names such as Henkel and Rona/Merck as suppliers.

Ergo Chemical has 38 employees, most of them coming from the neighbouring villages: Baita, Craciunesti, Fizes. Only one employee was transferred here, while the others used to be unemployed and had no training in this field.

"This kind of work does not require special physical effort and the working conditions are proper," Nicolae Gheorghiu, the company's production manager, maintains.

The company attends all the fairs and exhibitions that are organised abroad, as this way it can maintain the ties with traditional suppliers, at the same time looking for new ones and finding news about the latest technologies in the field.

The company has recently attended Cosmoprof exhibition from Bologna and Incosmetic, which was held in Spain this year.

The cosmetics firm has a share capital worth about 200,000 dollars and registers annual turnover of 10 billion lei. It comprises a laboratory for the quality tests, with high-performance equipment imported from France, Italy and Belgium.

The products are then transferred to a quarantine room, where they wait for the lab results. Beside the other functional rooms, the company has its own thermal power plant and locker rooms for the employees.

The building that hosts Ergo Chemical is a former hall belonging to SC Siderurgica, which was disassembled in the meanwhile and bought by the current owners after an auction was organised.

The building was completely renovated in order to be more functional. The works were performed by the largest private company dealing with pharmaceutical and cosmetic design.

Everything was done in accordance with Good Manufacturing Product (GMP) European norms of the drugs and cosmetics industry.

There are few finite goods in the warehouse of Ergo Chemicals Industries, though the monthly output amounts to about 40,000 items - hair dye, nail polish and others.

This is possible because the company does not manufacture on stock and it permanently assesses the level of sales attained over the previous months. The company's sales department includes eight agents who cover the entire country.
