World's number one PC maker arrives in Romania

07.10.2003, 00:00 9

The world's number one PC maker, Dell, is getting ready to open its first official Romanian office, sooner than its executives thought it would.

Dell has appointed Dragos Mateescu, former head of Fujitsu Siemens Computers Austria, regional manager for Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia. This confirms the rumours about Dell planning to open an office in Bucharest. Dell officials had initially said an office would be opened in 2004 or maybe early in 2005.

"The growth in PC sales in Romania over the last few years has made Dell consider this market, which is verified by the appointment of the regional manager for the three countries. Unless something unexpected comes up, Dell's Romanian office will be opened early in November or in December at the latest," sources on the IT&C market were quoted as saying by Mediafax news agency. Dell's Romanian partners concurred.

Dell is one of the leading personal computer makers constantly vying with Hewlett-Packard (HP) over the number one spot. Dell came out first in the second quarter of 2003 again, outrunning HP by 4-500 thousand computers sold. Dell's revenues in the first half of the fiscal 2003-2004 (that began on February 1) amounted to $19.31bn, while net profit reached $1.22bn.

An International Data Corp (IDC) survey conducted in April shows Dell to have accounted for 17.3% of the market worldwide, followed by its archrival HP with 15.8%. Its market share progressed to 17.8% in the three months that followed, according to IDC, and HP in its turn gained some ground, reaching 16.2%.

Dell's market share in Romania at the end of Q2, 2003 was of 2.4% for all PC categories (desktops, laptops and servers), which placed it eighth among computer vendors. Dell's Romanian sales amounted to $4 million last year, as analysts say.

Dell is current represented by two companies in Romania - System Plus, which operates as a dealer and Romsys, which operates as an integrator.
