Stolojan gets closer to Iliescu in polls

PDSR (Party of Social Democracy) and Ion Iliescu continue to lead by far in the electorate's preferences, holding 44 and 36 percent, respectively, of vote intentions, according to the latest CURS poll ordered by Mediafax news agency and the PRO Institute and conducted between August 7-10.

Iliescu, quoted with 36 percent of options, is followed in the race for Cotroceni by Theodor Stolojan, for whom 20 percent of Romanians would vote and who outdistances Mugur Isarescu, credited with 15 percent of vote intentions, Teodor Melescanu and Corneliu Vadim Tudor, each holding 10 percent and Petre Roman, with 6%.

The main opposition party is followed by PNL (Liberal Party) with 11 percent, PRM (Great Romania Party) and CDR (Romanian Democratic Convention)-10%, PD (Democrat Party)-9%, ApR (Alliance for Romania)-8 percent and UDMR (Democrat Union of Hungarians in Romania)-6 percent.

The tandem Iliescu (president) - Adrian Nastase (premier) is considered as the most appropriate by 34 percent of interviewees, this team being however outpaced by the one made up of Theodor Stolojan and Mugur Isarescu, holding 35 percent of options.

Approximately 12 percent of the respondents prefer a tandem made up of Melescanu and Stolojan, 6 percent go for the Roman-Basescu tandem, while 6 percent favour a team led by C.V. Tudor-Gheorghe Funar.

In another variant, the tandem Isarescu-Stolojan is credited with 33 percent of potential votes, and Stolojan-Melescanu with 13 percent. In this situation, the tandems Iliescu-Nastase and C.V Tudor-Gheorghe Funar maintain their previous scores, while the Roman-Basescu tandem rises to 7 percent.
