$2.25m for Metropol and Grup As

03.12.2002, 00:00 6

The auto insurers bureau in Romania (BAAR) has finished paying off the $2.25 million overdue debts that Metropol and Grup As held to the Green Card Bureaux abroad. The two companies had sold tonnes of Green Cards (civil auto liability for those travelling abroad) until last year, accumulating debts to the foreign Green Card bureaux. The debts amounted to some $1.2 million in Metropol's case and about $1 million in Grup As' case. The debts came as a result of the damages caused by the vehicles insured by the two companies in Italy and Hungary mainly. The claims were settled in full, in line with the common practice of the international Green Card system in the respective countries, which then forwarded the bill to the Romanian counterpart, the BAAR. The money had to be paid or else the companies in the BAAR stood to lose their right to sell green cards. ZF
