Romcif, Carpatcement's performance booster

20.05.2003, 00:00 10

Carpatcement, a company that operates the cement factories held by German group HeidelbergCement in Romania logged 9.5 million euro turnover in Q1. Turnover is therefore 18% higher than in the corresponding period of last year, against an increase in the number of factories from 2 to 3.
If considering only the results posted by the Moldocim Bicaz and Casial Deva plants the German group already held a year ago, sales dropped some 40% in the above-mentioned period, complying with the market trend. Lafarge Romcim announced a 30-35% sales decline for the first quarter, while Holcim Romania reported a 40% decline.
In other words, the overall first quarter results registered by the German operator were practically saved by integrating Romcif Fieni's operations, which it took over in October 2002.
The latest data available show Carpatcement accounted for 35% of the domestic market early this year, while its rivals, Lafarge Romcim and Holcim Romania accounted for 34% and 31% of a market estimated at some 240 million euros. Carpatcement invested approximately 2 million euros in the three factories for technology upgrade, environment protection, social security and development purposes throughout January-March.
"Carpatcement in 2003 is hoping to attain at least the same turnover as in 2002, that is about 95 million euros," said Mihai Rohan, general manager of Carpatcement Romania SRL, the local branch of the German construction supplies group HeidelbergCement. adrian.mirsanu@zf.ro
