Romanian managers refuse to be "tied down"

01.10.2007, 18:13 10

Increasingly more Romanian managers choose to give up the financial support offered by the organisations where they work, and pay the costs of an MBA or an executive MBA programme on their own. The explanation is simple: this way, Romanian managers can secure professional independence. "When the company decides to pay the costs of a business management programme for one of its employees, it also sets down a few rules. It 'ties you down' for a certain amount of time," says Marcel Duhaneanu, rector of the Assebuss Postgraduate Romanian-American School of Business. A manager benefiting from such an advantage has to stay and work in the organisation that has invested in them, so that their knowledge, acquired as a result of the Executive MBA programme, is put to use within the same organisation. Although taking part in such a project in Romania entails rather high costs, which can exceed 20,000 euros, Romanian managers choose to make an effort in order to preserve their independence. The number of managers of the Executive MBA programme who have been granted financial support by the employing companies has dropped from 90% to 70%. Therefore, one third of managers involved in Executive MBA programmes are paying out of their own pocket for the programme, which costs 18,000 euros over two years. This percentage is going up, in line with the trend on the American market, where almost 70% of the EMBA and MBA programmes are fully or partly paid for by employees.
