Romanian businessman sells $10 million antivirus to Bill Gates

11.06.2003, 00:00 11

Microsoft, the world's largest software company, is buying technology developed in Romania. The company yesterday said it would purchase the intellectual property rights and the antivirus technological resources from the GeCAD Software company.

Or, more precisely, RAV Antivirus, the technology developed by GeCAD Software will become a Microsoft property.

The acquisition of the GeCAD technology will help the American giant provide customers with enhanced security by supplying antivirus solutions for the Microsoft products and services, U.S. officials say.

Moreover, Microsoft will use the experience of the GeCAD engineers to improve the safety of its products and to provide technical support to its partners, suppliers of security software.

In fact, GeCAD specialists will soon embark on a flight to Redmond, Bill Gates' headquarters. The GeCAD team will thus join the "regiment" of more than 200 Romanians working in the Microsoft campus.

"We could not have found a better home for a technology developed in Romania," admits Georgescu, who is also thrilled because the GeCAD technology will find a place on the computers of millions of users worldwide.

Although neither Microsoft nor GeCAD Software disclosed the transaction's value, sources close to the two companies say it ranges between 10-20 million dollars.

The transaction is all the more interesting since the GeCAD release announcing the deal under the "additional information" column lists Diwaker Singh as the contact person. Singh is the former head of Zapp Mobile and he has not been heard of since leaving the mobile operator. iuliana.susanu@zf.ro
