Italian manufacturer Pirelli, which has a tyre and metallic cord plant in Slatina, will invest 250 million euros in the construction of a diesel engine filter plant, located in Bumbesti-Jiu, Gorj county, according to Pirelli president Marco Tronchetti-Provera. The new investment is in addition to 250 million euros already injected over the last five years, which targets a range of plants that will include units dedicated to manufacturing tyres, metallic cord and diesel engines. Pirelli's overall investment in Romania will, therefore, amount to 500 million euros by 2011. The 250 million-euro investments expected by 2011 will be used to construct the plant in Gorj county, and to boost production capacities at the existing facilities. The new project will benefit from a state aid worth a maximum of 28 million euros. After production starts at the filter plant in Bumbesti, the number of employees of the Pirelli group in Romania will exceed 3,000. At the end of last year, investments of the Italian manufacturer on the local market reached 167 million euros, with the bulk of this budget being allocated for the construction of the tyre plant in Slatina, a project started in 2004.
