New challenges for retailers

05.01.2005, 00:00 7

The hard ROL, the increase in the real estate prices and especially the new law on the large surface area stores are those elements that will have the most powerful impact on the retailers' business in Romania this year. The potential problems, however, will not prevent the modern retail from crossing the two billion-euro threshold in 2005. The government decision enacted last September, which endorsed the criteria to implement the large surface area retail structures, is the biggest problem the major chains in Romania are facing, Andreea Mihai, Carrefour Romania's marketing manager believes. The new government decision enforced as of mid last month stipulates that the large spaces for retail, that is those in excess of 1,000 sqm will require prior endorsement from a special board. "This will cause some difficulties for us and slow down our expansion, but we will try to adjust so as to be competitive as usual and open as many stores, as possible," Andreea Mihai says. Another problem retailers on the Romanian market are bringing up is the introduction of the hard ROL. Re-denomination, Selgros Romania officials feel, is the main problem retailers, either foreign or Romanian, will face this year. "The re-denomination is an additional sustained effort for us and for the other companies (in this business, i.e.)," the representatives of Selgros Cash & Carry Romania say. ZF
