New accommodation facilities will be available on the Bucharest hotel market next spring: the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel (the former Dorobanti) and a new wing at the Majestic, following investments of $20 million and $5 million respectively.
The long renovation works of the Dorobanti Hotel will come to an end next May, with the hotel scheduled to open for business next summer, says Corina Matea, Romanian development manager of the Howard Johnson International Chain, which will include this hotel. At the same time, the extension of the Majestic Hotel is scheduled for completion early next year.
Another hotel, that is Ambasador, may be closed for an extensive retooling process, worth some $8-$10 million, too. Under the circumstances, 214 rooms (356 beds) will be closed.
On the other hand, the Dorobanti Hotel will bring 285 rooms to the market, offered under the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel brand, the highest class of the entire chain administrated by the Howard Johnson Hotels & Inns. The refurbishment works have already been delayed, considering the hotel was supposed to reopen this spring. The company officials say the retooling works required an over $20 million investment, $12 million of which were obtained in form of a syndicated loan granted by BRD-SocGen and Alpha Bank Romania for eight years.
On the other hand, the Majestic Hotel will have 114 rooms available upon completion of the extension process, compared to the current 70, as well as new facilities for the business clients, conference rooms that may accommodate up to 100-400 people, a fitness studio, a swimming pool, restaurants and a parking lot.
The investments began two years ago, with the Majestic hotel lined up for inclusion in an international chain following completion of the investment programme worth $5 million, Mihai Corneliu Acatrinei, general manager of the hotel, told Ziarul Financiar.
