IDC: Laptop sales up 92% in Q3

The Romanian PC market has increased by around 50% in the third quarter of this year, to 165 million dollars (120.1 million euros), according to a survey conducted by research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) Romania. The total number of PCs sold (desktop systems, laptops and servers) reached 193,541 units, up 33.8% against the same period last year. The best-selling systems in Q3 were laptops, which saw a 92% sales increase against Q2, while desktop systems rose by only 17.4%. The server segment saw an increase of 21.3% against Q3 in 2006. The share of portable systems within the total volume of sales reached 31.5%, up six percent against the level registered in Q1. In terms of value, laptops accounted for 40.2% of the total, an over 5% increase. Desktop computer sales fell by around 6% against the January-March period, to 66.9% in terms of units. They accounted for 53.9% of the market in terms of value, compared with 59.1% in the first quarter of the year. According to the IDC study, trends experienced on the local PC market are different from the second quarter of the year, when 165,000 units were sold, worth 147 million dollars (109.1 million euros).
