Highways are far below EU standards

09.10.2006, 18:52 8

Romanian contractors think highways built so far are far below the standards imposed by European Union countries, due to a lack of an efficient management and design of the works. Romania has 210 kilometres of highway, being among Europe's laggards in this respect, with the necessary being estimated at 2,000 km. Big highway projects keep getting stuck , the last example coming from work on the Brasov - Bors highway, where the American company Bechtel is falling behind with its work schedule. "We won't have highways like in the West because Romanians don't work as Westerners. Our design, execution and management are not at Western standards. Look at how Bucharest - Pitesti and Bucharest - Fundulea are managed," said on Saturday Nicolae Constantinescu, general manager of construction company CCCF Bucharest in the seminar called "Infrastructure and European funds," organised by ZF in collaboration with Bostina si Asociatii (Bostina and Partners) and Fan Courier.
