Head of CNAS: Informal payments reach 500m euros in healthcare system

16.06.2009, 16:28 6
Irinel Popescu, chairman of the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) says after the first quarter of this year, sums collected for the health care budget are on schedule, so the 16 billion-RON (4 billion-euro) revenue mark should be reached by the end of the year. "Judging by the first three months of the year, we should reach our budget. Cutting the budget is not justified primarily because this is health we are talking about and secondly because the money has been collected. But it is impossible to predict what will happen by the end of the year, because our main fear is the rise in unemployment," says Popescu. According to him, this was a surprise even for CNAS, although figures pointed to a rise in unemployment. However, there are late payments to drugstores. "Drugstores and hospitals are late in paying suppliers, but this will be settled," Popescu adds. As for informal payments in the health care system, Irinel Popescu puts them at around 300-500 million euros, and says the Romanian College pf Physicians is seeking solutions to the problem.
