Electrolux business increases by 25%

18.05.2006, 00:00 10

Electrolux Romania, the domestic branch of the Swedish home appliances producer, reported 25% higher turnover for last year, compared with the previous year.

The company''s officials have recently announced that turnover for 2005 amounted to 157 million euros, compared to the 125 million euros registered in 2004.

Regarding the development projects the management has for the production facilities in Romania, Electrolux intends to retain its rate of growth, with the goal of reaching a production capacity of 1.2 million cookers by 2007.

The company''s officials had at the beginning of the year stated that in 2005 the plant in Satu Mare produced 750,000 cookers, and the target for next year was to turn the production facility into a "Competence Centre for Free Standing Cookers".

The plant Electrolux owns in Satu Mare produces only cookers, and this is where most Zanussi-branded cookers sold in Europe are manufactured, with the plant producing both for the domestic and for foreign markets.

The Swedish company last year invested around 7.1 million euros into the Romanian plant, and as a result the productivity of the plant surged by 25%.

The total value of investment plan implemented by the group at the moment goes beyond 25 million euros. The company opened a warehouse last year at a cost of three million euros, with a storage capacity of 20,000 cubic metres, which will be the distribution centre for all the products sold in Romania. The number of employees has also risen consistently, at present employing more than 2,000 workers in the Satu Mare division of Electrolux.

Over recent years, the Swedish have transferred a part of cooker production from Italy or Sweden to the plant in Satu Mare, doubling the output of the Romanian branch.

Electrolux entered the Romanian market at the end of 1999, by setting up a sales unit in Bucharest. In December 1997, Electrolux became the majority stakeholder in Samus SA of Satu Mare, once it acquired 97% of stock.

In early 2000, the Swedish group bought another stake in Samus and at present owns more than 99% in the company.

The main rivals of Electrolux on the domestic market are groups such as Indesit Company, Whirlpool or Bosch Siemens, as well as Arcelik.
