Dimon Inc. buys Romanian tobacco

04.02.2004, 00:00 7

US-based Dimon Incorporated, the world's second-largest tobacco dealer, bought tobacco worth $1m from Romanian farmers last year, and is planning to do more business on the Romanian market, which is now dominated by imports. "We purchased several tones of tobacco from some 2,500 Romanian farmers. The direct investment accounted for $1m last year, but we will go further as we envision a project to increase the quantity we will buy from the Romanian market," said Grigore Leoveanu, general manager of Dimon International Tabak Romania, a branch of Dimon Incorporated. Romania's total tobacco output dropped to 3,500 tones last year, down almost 50% from 2002. ZF
