Alro Slatina: triple profit and new plant

23.10.2006, 18:31 11

Primary aluminium producer Alro Slatina witnessed a net profit worth 76 million euros in the first nine months, a three-fold increase against the same time in 2005. Amid a strong improvement in results, Alro has announced it intends to invest 620 million dollars (494 million euros) in building a new factory in Cernavoda, where it is to hire some 1,000 people. As a matter of fact, the company has also submitted a letter of intent, showing its interest to participate in the building of reactors 3 and 4 of the nuclear power station in Cernavoda. The electrical power consumed accounts for 60% of the production costs of primary aluminium, if eliminating the costs of alumina, according to company representatives. The decision to build the new facility near the nuclear power station in Cernavoda comes as a result of a pre-feasibility study, which proved that such a facility would help cut costs entailed by the transportation of electrical power and alumina from Alum Tulcea, the alumina producer controlled by the Slatina-based company.
