"Fete de la musique" for a whole week

19.06.2000, 00:00 Autor: Aristita Albacan

Since its first edition in 1982 up to the present - upon the initiative of the French minister of Culture Jacques Lang - "Fete de la musique" has become a great opportunity to enjoy music, as well a gathering place both for various genres and forms of artistic expression and for music lovers and performers. Starting with 1985, this event became international, first in the former French colonies, then in more than one hundred countries.

"Fete de la Musique" provides for a certain democratisation of culture by its major themes, as well as by its variety and by allowing free access of the audience to the concerts. For this edition, "Fete de la Musique" chose as major theme "the music without borders" concept, which points to racial complexity, cultural encounters and exchanges, interest in a new and different reality.

Fete de la Musique has been celebrated in Romania as well, at a less complex level, nevertheless. It has relied basically on Folk music concerts within the French Institute in Bucharest and other French cultural centres all over the country. For the first time in its history, the celebration is bigger this year and it is going out of the Institute to reach the entire Bucharest. Today at 8 p.m., the French dance and hip-hop group Saian Supa Crew is performing an extraordinary concert at the Mall in Bucharest. On Wednesday, at 8 p.m. an African music concert will take place in the Cismigiu Park kiosk and on Friday, at 10 p.m. at the Karma Club, everybody is expected to take part in a techno-music evening together with DJ Kell and DRDSCO.

Saian Supa Crew is a young rap group, very popular in France. Its members perform a poetic rap, whose origins are different from any brotherhood philosophy and whose themes have nothing to do with the traditional violent ghetto stories. They prefer an elaborate style, by developing the dancing part in an original and spectacular way. It is true that their favourite themes are still related to drugs and violence, but the words of the songs are unusual for such a music genre, which in fact appeals to the French audience.

The extraordinary concert performed by Saian Supa Crew will be opened by two young local groups, whose popularity has increased lately: Verdikt and Evrika.
