Both in terms of wine production and the vineyard area, Romaniaholds top positions internationally. Thus, less than 200,000hectares of vineyard are cultivated domestically, meaning the fifthposition in the EU after Spain, Italy, France and Portugal, thesixth in Europe and ninth globally.
In terms of wine production, Romania ranks 11th globally, accordingto a report by the International Organisation of Vine and WineOrganisation.
Wine consumption has been dwindling in recent years, and for 2010the estimates of the National Vineyard Growers and Wine ProducersAssociation (PNVV) show the market will fall by 12-13% to around350m euros. This trend, along with consumption shifting to cheapproducts have pushed producers to start opening their own winecellars.
