Vampire leads the way in wine exports

07.07.2004, 00:00 8

Romanian winemakers are finding it very difficult to penetrate the US market. With competition coming from the many French, Spanish, Italian and Australian wines, Feteasca Neagra or Sec de Murfatlar might seem to stand little chances of success. Unless, of course, they start to associate themselves with something very well known. A breakthrough in this regard came from the Vampire brand, which draws upon Romania's association with Count Dracula and Transilvania. Estimates of sales of the Vampire brand of Romanian wine on the American market this year stand at around 350,000 bottles (0.75l each), worth $1 million, up 45% compared with last year. "After Vinexpo America, one of the biggest wine fairs in the US, we concluded new export contracts with American dealers. This will lead to an increase in the sale of Vampire wines on the American market," says Philip Cox, commercial manager of Cramele Recas, the producer of the Vampire wine. ZF
