Thermopane glass erodes varnishes, credits boost washable paints

05.01.2004, 00:00 9

The market of varnishes and paints in Romania is running at two speeds. Whereas dispersions (which include washable wall paints) progressed 4% in 2003 from 2002, the varnishes keep losing ground to thermopane windows, wall faience or pexal, a retail audit conducted by Daedalus Consulting market research company shows.

The total domestic market of varnishes and paints is estimated to 110-120 million euros a year, with dispersions and enamels accounting for 50%-60% and the paints for automotive, industrial, furniture industry use, powders, resins, inks, wood coatings etc. accounting for the rest of it.

"The erosion is part of a natural trend induced by the emergence of materials that make the use of enamel no longer necessary, such as the thermopane glass used for windows or doors, the faience for walls or the pexal for heating installations," Daedalus Consulting analysts say.

At the same time, the increase in the dispersion market was induced by the lessening of the restrictions on lending, which directly impacted on the investments in the refurbishment of homes and finishings for newly built ones.

Daedalus conducts a survey of the retail market of varnishes and paints throughout August 15 - September 15, which is considered the peak season for sales of such products. The survey is a barometer of the market and highlights the trends on the market and the market shares on the main segments.

Dufa Romania accounts for 26.9% of the dispersion market, having outrun Kober Rolac, which accounts for 16.2%, in the fall of 2003, thus reversing the hierarchy in place the year before, when Kober accounted for 20.5% and Dufa for 19.5%.
