Spirits boost Zarea sales

24.08.2004, 00:00 8

In the first half of the year, sparkling wine producer Zarea Bucharest reported turnover standing at almost 3 million euros, 30% higher as compared to the same period last year. "The increase was mainly triggered by sales of spirits, since most traders stocked up on them because of the increase in excises for these drinks. This trend was registered at the level of the entire market," says Emil Popescu, general manager of Karom Drinks, the main shareholder in Zarea Bucharest. The company produces Karpaten bitter, Florentina liqueur and Moldova, Arad and Olimpia brandies beside the renowned Zarea sparkling wine. Popescu considers the recent decrease in excises for wines, from 42 euros/hectolitre to 30 euro/hectolitre as being insufficient. "Excises have decreased very little, continuing to be higher than last year. If the Executive is to decide to boost the consumption of drinks that do not use distilled alcohol, such as sparkling wines, which rather use naturally fermented alcohol, it must reduce and eventually do away with excises for sparkling wines, as it has happened in all the country with high wine consumption," Popescu explained.
