22.01.2009, 17:05 29

Romania is currently the seventh largest beer producer in Europe, ahead of countries with a long-established tradition in the industry, such as Belgium, Denmark, Austria and Ireland, according to data from the Brewers of Europe organisation. "Romania's current production accounts for around 5% of beer production in Europe. It has consolidated its position over the last ten years, considering that in 1998 Romania accounted for a little over 2% of beer production on the European market," said Constantin Bratu, general manager of the Brewers of Romania association, which includes all four local subsidiaries of beer multinationals (Heineken Romania, Ursus Breweries, InBev Romania, United Romanian Breweries Bereprod), as well as Romanian-held Romaqua, controlled by Octavian Cretu, holder of the Albacher brand. Alongside the five companies, the largest independent player on the Romanian beer market is the European Food group, held by brothers Ioan and Viorel Micula.
