Ringier takes over Pro Sport

Mediapro and Ringier (Switzerland) media groups struck a deal in late last year, entailing the acquisition of the leading sports daily in Romania, Pro Sport by the Sportrom SA company, controlled by the Ringier Group. The deal will become operational on January 31. This is one of the most important transactions in the Romanian media in the past decade. Mediapro and Ringier are the leading publishing groups in Romania. Mediapro publishes ProTV Magazin, Ziarul Financiar, Acasa Magazin, Playboy and the local journal network comprising Clujeanul, Banateanul, Ieseanul, Bihoreanul, Hunedoreanul. Ringier is a powerful European press group, which publishes Libertatea daily, the economic Capital weekly and Lumea Femeilor, Unica, TV Mania and Bravo magazines in Romania. Pro Sport daily was established in 1997 and headed by one of the most famous media people in Romania, Ovidiu Ioanitoaia. "Pro Sport has followed an upward trend year by year. It took three years to become profitable. The success is due to its editorial staff. This team practically formed at Sportul romanesc 11 years ago," Ovidiu Ioanitoaia, Pro Sport director said. Pro Sport is the third leading journal in Romania in terms of audience, after Libertatea and Evenimentul Zilei, according to the data of the National Audience Survey for the printed press released last fall. Pro Sport was registering 645,000 readers per issue back then, while Libertatea had 841,000 readers and Evenimentul Zilei had 789,000. ZF
