Private health insurance market estimated at 14,000 clients

30.06.2008, 19:27 6

The private health insurance market numbers 14,000 clients at most, but the growth potential is significant, according to Mihail Marcu, chairman of medical services provider MedLife. "The private insurance sector will, however, grow, as happened in countries like Brazil, Greece and Turkey, where the state system is weak," says Marcu. According to him, the private medical services system in Romania accounts for 6-8% of the overall market, which was worth around 350 million euros in 2007, and is expected to exceed 400 million euros in 2008. The number of subscriptions for private medical services stands at 400,000, a lot higher than that of insurance policies. The companies operating on the private health insurance market include Interamerican, Aviva, AIG Life and Allianz-Tiriac. "The health insurance market is not seeing a steady development, and we believe it is in a merely burgeoning stage. Although the number of players on the private health insurance market has gone up, and despite the major investments performed on this market, it continues to see a slow growth rate, compared with its potential," says Frans Van der Ent, CEO of Interamerican.
