05.07.2010, 23:01 9

The first plant Procter & Gamble giant built in Romania waslike a race: with 700 people on the construction site, 240employees in training rooms and new equipment worth 70m dollars, the company started domestic shampoo production in less than a yearand a half after the builders hired by P&G first came toUrlaţi, near Ploieşti. Moreover, the Americans dropped plans totake European funding as these would have delayed the plantopening. After a year spent on the site or in P&G's improvisedoffices of Urlaţi, Belgian-born Luc Viaene, who has beensupervising the greenfield investment right since the beginning, has to wait for just one or two weeks more to see the first truckwith shampoos "made in Urlaţi" exit the plant gates. In the wake ofthe US investment, the Prahova county locality re-enters Romania'sindustrial map, after the over 12,000-resident town had lived onoil and the textile industry during communist years. For the newplant, P&G recruited 50-60% of employees from Urlaţi andneighbouring localities. Their average age is 30-35 years. Starting2011, the Urlaţi facility is likely to support P&G sales inEurope and Asia that ZF puts at several hundred million euros, evenbigger than the turnover the company generated in Romania lastyear, of 280m euros.
