Only 32 Romanian companies in Top 500 Eastern Europe

Romania's biggest company, Petrom, ranks 12th in the Top 500 Eastern Europe

Only seven Romanian companies are present in the ranking of the largest 100 companies in Central and Eastern Europe and 32 are in the top 500, according to the "Top 500 companies in Central and Eastern Europe" survey based on their 2006 turnover, conducted by Deloitte Central Europe in collaboration with Business Magazin magazine and with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita.
33 Polish companies, 20 from the Czech Republic, 13 from Hungary, 11 companies from Ukraine, 6 from Slovakia and one from Bulgaria are also among the largest 100 companies in the region.
The highest-ranking Romanian company is Petrom, filling the 12th spot of a ranking dominated by companies in the energy sector. The next Romanian company present in the ranking of companies in Central and Eastern Europe, by their 2006 turnover is Mittal Steel Galati, which ranks 63rd. Electrica is 67th, Dacia 69th, Metro Romania 72nd, Rompetrol Rafinare 73rd, with the top 100 companies ranking rounded off by Petrotel Lukoil.
Orange Romania can be found at No. 126, Vodafone Romania at No. 134, and Lukoil Romania at No. 137.
Distrigaz Sud ranks 157th, Romtelecom 163rd, Romgaz 165th, Interbrands 199th, Porsche Romania 207th, E.ON Gaz 222nd, Transelectrica 226th, Hidroelectrica 229th, Alro 252nd. Electrocentrale Bucuresti fills the no. 254 spot, with the next position being filled by Selgros.
The first position of the ranking is filled by Polish company PKN Orlen, with operations in the energy field and a 13.5 billion-euro turnover. The second position is occupied by Mol (with a 11.3 billion-euro turnover and a 1.2 billion-euro net profit), while the third position is filled by car manufacturer Skoda.
Approximately one third of the top 100 companies operate in the energy field, be they groups operating in the petroleum field, in natural gas extraction or in electricity production.
Three Volkswagen divisions (Skoda, VW Slovakia and Audi Hungary) are present in the top 10. Arcelor Mittal, leader of the worldwide steel sector, is present among the top 100 companies in Central and Eastern Europe with four divisions (Polish, Ukrainian, Czech, and Romanian). Another well-represented sector in the ranking is the telecommunications sector, with the regional leader of the equipment production segment being Nokia's Hungarian division.
