02.06.2005, 20:09 6

Italian winemaker Montresor, which entered the Romanian market by acquiring 1,000 hectares of land in Dobrogea, is planning to make wine in Romania for export to the European Union. "Romania came to our attention two years ago. Our plan is to produce very high quality wine for export to Western European markets and overseas," said Giorgio Montresor, the managing director of Montresor Group Verona. The company acquired 1,000 hectares in Crucea, Constanta County, as well as a wine cellar that is now undergoing reconstruction. It will also replant 100 hectares with Feteasca Neagra, Feteasca Alba, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties. "As for the rest of the land, which is currently being used to grow wheat and barley, we intend to work with the University of Verona, which has a very good relationship with the University of Iasi, in order to research the possibility of introducing innovative crops that match the conditions of the area. We have a lot of confidence in Romanian agriculture and intend to invest and stay here. Romania will be the future of European agriculture," said Montresor. ZF
