Major retailers introduce own brands

09.07.2003, 00:00 21

The major supermarket, hypermarket and cash & carry networks operating in Romania brought along their branded products. Even though such products account for only a small part of the sales and are not made in Romania, the companies have big plans in this regard. Carrefour is now selling under its own brand about 60 foodstuffs, an electronics and home appliances line (TV sets, refrigerators, microwaves, DVD players, washing machines), a light bulbs line and a battery line. The 60 foodstuffs are entirely made by French companies, and the non-foodstuffs are packed and distributed by companies in Romania. The company will have some of these products made in Romania, after having opened several other hypermarkets first. The XXL Mega Discount! chain's own products are all foodstuffs and include an edible oil brand, a vinegar brand, dairies, chocolate, wafers, frozen fries and cat and dog food, all of which made in Hungary. The Mega Image chain held by Belgian Delhaize Group sells a series of foodstuffs under its own brand. None of these products is made locally, but bringing Romanian companies into this business is planned. ZF
