Lobby to drop excises on digital cameras

01.07.2004, 00:00 7

The excises levied by the Romanian State on the sale of digital cameras could be dropped, if a recently submitted draft law from the IT and Communications Committee of the Chamber of Deputies is enacted. Such a step would bring the Romanian market into line with European Union members, where no such excises are imposed on the sale of digital cameras, the Committee chairman Varujan Pambuccian explained. Excises currently stand at 25%, meaning that digital cameras bought in Romania cost 25% more than those purchased in the EU, Pambuccian said. That still happens despite the fact that the margins applied by retailers, as well as the VAT charged on the domestic market, are close to those in the EU. Two other countries that do not levy excises on the sale of digital cameras are Bulgaria and Albania, Pambuccian added. ZF
