Avicola Calarasi estimates its gross profit will be down to half in 2006, in comparison with the 11.9 million RON posted last year. Turnover stood at some 100 million RON, the same as in the previous year. "The high costs generated by bird flu, the drop in prices on the market and the fall in consumption of fowl lead to a drop in profitability," said the company's financial manager, Traian Bulearca. In the first six months, company expenditures reached a similar value to that of revenues. "We will be back on track in the second half of the year, because the market has started to recover, consumers have found that it is not dangerous to buy poultry and trust the safety measures that the producers took," said the company's financial manager.
