French retail companies, some of the most dynamic players on the Romanian retail market, will invest more than one billion euros over the next five years in a bid to expand and strengthen store networks, reads a survey recently published by Euromonitor. "Retail is one of the sectors where, at least so far, the French have taken the lead, having initiated projects that could have been regarded as risky ones, but which have eventually brought them considerable profits," Euromonitor analysts feel. Investment plans announced by French companies are targeting various market segments, such as the hypermarket one, where Carrefour (owned by Hyparlo) and Cora (owned by Louis Delhaize) are considering massive expansion projects. Romania's modern retail sector is witnessing rapid growth, as the small stores, still holding a dominant position on the overall retail market, are losing ground to the new commercial centres, hypermarkets, supermarkets and discount outlets.
