Focus on SMEs drives DHL's business up 37.5%

19.09.2006, 20:10 6

DHL International Romania international express delivery company in the first half of this year generated 37.5% higher turnover compared with the corresponding period of last year owing to portfolio expansion and its focus on SMEs.
"The factors that contributed to this increase are mainly related to the expansion of our services portfolio, the launch of road groupage service, as well as stronger promotion of services provided to certain customer segments, such as small and medium customers," stated Alexandru Gheorghe, commercial manager with DHL International Romania. The growth pace the DHL branch witnessed in Romania was faster than the one the company registered globally. "This is a normal situation, considering we are operating on an emerging market with a robust growth pace, with a direct impact over demand for the services we provide," explained Gheorghe. He specified DHL's capability to adjust to the changes various industrial branches witnessed in terms of development had a positive influence over the company's turnover. "I would like to mention here the consolidation trend of the financial sector or the decline of the domestic textile industry amid increased export quotas to the US and EU for Far East countries. Both sectors are major consumers of our services".
DHL has budgeted investments worth 1.3 million euros for this year. "In the first half of this year, we invested in infrastructure needed for the launch of new services, such as terminals used in providing road groupage services in Bucharest, Brasov and Oradea, and, on the other hand, in improving infrastructure required by the already existing services through the opening of 3 new local operational centres, as well as by carrying out a programme related to the acquisition of 106 new freight transportation vehicles," explained Gheorghe.
DHL Romania international express delivery company last year reached turnover worth 18 million euros, up 35% from 2004. Turnover growth was triggered both by massive investments in infrastructure and by the strategy the company has embraced globally, meant to turn DHL from a provider of shipment services into a provider of complex logistic services.
According to Gheorghe's statement, DHL's market share stands at 45% for international express deliveries and at 4% for domestic express deliveries.
