Five huge energy projects worth 10bn euros

The five biggest energy projects currently under review by theEconomy Ministry are worth around 10bn euros. Some of them havebeen under discussion ever since the '70s, others are more recent,but none has entered the building phase.

While state officials are often saying it is these majorinvestments that can turn Romania into an important regional energyplayer, and domestic companies have been awaiting them as a rescueafter two years of crisis, Tarniţa-Lăpuşteşti hydropower station,reactors 3 and 4 of Cernavodă nuclear power station, Romania-Turkeysubmarine cable, AGRI and the carbon capture warehouse ofsouth-western Romania have not gone beyond the research phase.

"Romania needs to operate major investments in electricitygeneration. We are now at a moment when we have to choose thetechnologies with which we're going ahead," believes Ionuţ Purica,an energy and environment expert with the Romanian Academy.
