Economy Ministry: We are making losses because we sell domestic gas to chemical industry

27.05.2010, 20:51 9

Tudor Serban,Secretary of State in the Economy Ministry, said that becausedomestically-produced gas, which is twice as cheap as imported gas,has been sold for almost a year to big industrial consumers, mainlyto the chemical industry, the domestic gas sector has beenloss-making, which is one of the reasons for the fact that there isno money for investments. Last year, the state devised ananti-crisis measure whereby the big industrial consumers, especially those in the chemical industry, received domesticallyproduced gas. Although it was supposed to last from June to October2009, the measure was extended by one year, until October 2010.

"Selling domesticgas is loss-making. This is one of the reasons for which we don'thave money for investments. The situation is only relatively right.Anyway, supporting the chemical industry with cheap gas is notsustainable in the long run," Serban said at the Mediafax TalksAbout Energy conference, without, however, giving a concrete answeras to elimination of this measure before October 2010 or not underthe circumstances.
