Cat Groupe - Renault in Romania

16.10.2000, 00:00 13

Logistics and transport services provided by French automaker Renault will be coordinated in Romania as well by Belgian company Cat Groupe, which is to begin operating next month.

Cat Groupe is a company created by the Renault concern in 1957, with a view to easing truck exports to the North American continent. Six years later, the group took over the organisation of all Renault shipments outside France.

Cat Groupe last year posted turnover worth 1.1 billion euros, while net profit stood at 45 million euros. The company currently employs 2,300 people. Cat Groupe operates in over 150 countries and has over 190 agencies.

By taking over the main stake in Automobile Dacia, in 1999, Renault became the most important company on the Romanian auto market, controlling, by Dacia and Renault brands, about three quarters of the car market. On the first nine months of the year, the company sold 27,500 Dacia cars and 2,700 Renault autos.

The group last week launched the new Dacia Nova model, equipped with a Renault engine and gearbox, which will represent a serious competitor for imported cars, also due to its basic price of 4,200 euros. Besides, Dacia managers estimate the company will sell next year about 40,000 Dacia SupeRNova cars, the total sales posted by Dacia Nova in its five years of existence.

In September last year, Renault took over 51 percent of Dacia, for 50 million dollars, and has so far increased its participation to 73 percent.

Car sales on the Romanian market posted a significant decrease on the first nine months of the year, standing at a 33 percent lower level than the one registered in the same period of 1999, mainly following the fall in local car sales.
