Bucharest residents buy 4 times more cars than national average

05.05.2008, 18:09 12

One in every 79 people in Bucharest bought a car in the first three months of the year, 4 times higher on average than the national figure (one car per 321 inhabitants), according to the statistics of the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA). More than 24,000 cars were sold in Bucharest in the above-mentioned interval, while nationally the number of cars delivered stood at 67,423. However, not all cars sold in Bucharest are registered or used in the capital, with around 30% being acquired by customers from outside Bucharest, who prefer to buy in the capital due to the heavy discounts operated by dealers or because there is a much shorter delivery period compared with local distributors. In comparison, Germany, Spain and the UK, the countries with the largest car markets in terms of sales, saw one car sold per every 115, 109 and 88 inhabitants respectively in the first three months of the year.
