Bridge to attract 48m-euro deals

22.06.2004, 00:00 9

The EU-backed project for constructing the Calafat-Vidin bridge across the Danube, the second such connection between Romania and Bulgaria, will necessitate related infrastructure works worth 48 million within Romania, according to the Romanian Ministry for Transportation, Construction and Tourism.

On Sunday, Romanian minister Miron Mitrea presented the project, involving total investments of 300 million euros, to the two premiers, Adrian Nastase and Simion de Saxa-Coburg Gotha.

Financing for the planning and construction of the new bridge across the Danube, as well as for the infrastructure within the Vidin region, will be covered by the Bulgarian side, while the Romanian side will only finance the road and railway infrastructure within the Calafat region. Construction-fitting works are set to amount to about 41.8 million euros, out of a total projected cost of 48 million euros.

The Transportation Ministry has allocated funds derived from the European Union through ISAP, and from the European Investment Bank, to finance the work taking place on the Romanian side of the Danube, as well as to provide connections on routes associated with the Pan-European Corridor IV.

Construction works will be finalised during 2008.

The project linked to the building of a new bridge across the Danube had long been a subject of debate between Bulgaria and the European Union on one side, which supported the Calafat-Vidin route, and the Romanian authorities, which favoured a different route between Giurgiu and Ruse, closer to Bucharest.
