Average Bucharest inhabitant must work 61 years to afford city centre apartment

A Bucharest inhabitant with an average monthly wage would have to work 61 years (736 months) to be able to afford a 120 sqm apartment in the centre of the Capital, during which time they would have to save their entire income. For the first quarter of this year, the average wage in the Capital stood at 383 euros a month, according to the National Statistics Institute. In comparison, the price of a 120 sqm apartment in a central district of the Capital stands at 282,000 euros, according to the website of Global Property Guide, which specialises in analysing investment opportunities. The price per square metre of apartments in the centre of Bucharest is calculated at a level of 2,350 euros/sqm. Under the circumstances, Romanians are among the European citizens having to work the most hours in order to be able to afford a home. In contrast, a Belgian employee earning the minimum wage only has to save 209 monthly wages for an apartment in the centre of Brussels. The minimum wage in Belgium is 1,234 euros/month, according to Eurostat data and apartments in central Brussels are even cheaper than in central Bucharest, according to data from Global Property Guide. The highest monthly wages recorded in Europe are in Luxembourg, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and France, where an employee can make, at minimum, 1,200 euros/month, around four times higher than the average wage in Bucharest. On the other hand, city centre homes are more expensive in London (14,522 euros/sqm), Amsterdam (6,667 euros/sqm), Paris (6,667 euros/sqm), Madrid (4,000 euros/sqm) and Prague (2,367 euros/sqm).
