Austrians shut down Buzău sugar plant for four months

Agrana Romania, the biggest domestic sugar producer, is set tohalt the production of Buzău plant for four months, one of thebiggest domestic sugar production facilities, starting thisOctober.


The decision will hurt 133 employees who will be sent ontechnical unemployment during this period, according to companydata.
Agrana Romania representatives have resorted to this cost cuttingmove for the second time during this year, after having sent 144employees on technical unemployment in spring.
The domestic subsidiary of Austria's Agrana Zucker group also ownsa sugar processing plant in Roman, but it has not issued anysimilar decisions for the latter so far.
"We had hoped we would not have to make this decision again. Thisis the last move we make to slash costs as the company's plans havenot turned out as we wanted this year," stated Emilian Dobrescu,the general manager of the company.
Agrana Romania last year reached 144.4m-euro turnover, up 1.6% inRON and down by over 11% in euros. At the same time, Agranareported net losses of 1.7m RON (around 400,000 euros), againstprofit worth 15.7m RON (4.2m euros) in the previous year.
